Emo (I wrote this April 3, 2008)
Do you ever just wake up in the morning and ask yourself "Should I start dressing like an Emo?"
Some of you may be asking "What is an Emo?" Allow me to describe beginning with description and following with history and finally ways to act like an Emo according to me. (I have done alot of research on this topic because I like to know what I may get myself into).
When I first began my research, I was sitting next to a depressed looking fat teenarger wearing a black long sleeve shirt and neon green and blacksleeves. This was complimented with chains and a studded belt with some rainbow jelly bracelets. He had dyed black hair in dreadlocks that went to his chin. He lifted up his sleeve and started writing ’EMOTIONAL’ on his forearm and started making what seemed like slash marks on his wrists. He looked pathetic and lonely so I asked him "Is everything okay?" He was immediately drawn to me and answered with a gay lisp "I am fine, I am an ’Emo’. That is why I am writing ’emotional’ on my arm" The fat teenager then preceeded to talk to me non-stop. The only thing that could have made this moment more melodramatic was to have a personal violinist follow him around to play a sad tune while he talked. I could not stop him even though I wanted to ask him why he would consider himself ’emotional’ to which I found out very shortly. He was a little crying, whinning bitch with whom I could not even have a normal converasation with. He just went on and on about how much life sucks. I concluded that he is truely an Emo. This was my first interaction when the style was first coming out.
Which leads me to my description of an Emo person. They are not gothic looking, but very close. They like colors, bright neon colors but not too many. They like to wear belts sideways. The male Emos like to wear really tight jeans really really tight. Which brings me to an interesting observation, guy Emos act really gay, even if they aren’t. You might catch them wearing eyeliner even. Female Emos resemble a Living Dead Doll except a little more butch.
History of Emos According to me: It was inspired by the various roles of Johnny Depp (my man.... I love him) Let us start with Cpt. Jack Sparrow. Everyone loved Pirates of the Caribean that made a huge impact on our society today. Everyone loved the charecter that Johnny Depp played as a very gay looking pirate with eyeliner. Many women I know think he is very sexy in that role, which suprised the male population that they too found him attractive and embraced the idea of wearing eyeliner to be like him. Now lets see the role of Edward Scissorhand, also a very sexy role that drove women crazy. The black leather suit with belt buckles and crazy black hair. After realizing how sexy Johnny Depp was in Pirates of the Caribean they started reviewing his older work which inspired the wearing of black with the eyeliner. The third role I am thinking of was his musical vocal talent in Nightmare before Christmas, a dark Tim Burton computer animated film, and as you know the character Jack the pumpking king is very depressed. So after watching these movies someone decided to combine the three styles, emotional, dark and eyeliner and add an intersting twist bright colors so they can still look cool at Raves. Then to cater to the Emo crowd Tim Burton decided to take the darkest, bloodiest most depressing Broadway play and make a movie out of it, Sweeny Todd.
Profile of the Emo crowd before they became Emo: Now lets think of the crowd that liked these Johnny Depp movies, probably a little lonely, still likes 80’s music, ecstacy users who went to raves, or those who just went to raves and didn’t do ecstacy, played with glow sticks, stuck in between wanting to be gothic and a skater, Perhaps even they dress goth one day and skater the next.So of course Emo was the perfect style for them.
True Emo’s according to me: Now you can dress Emo and not be a real Emo. I noticed that ever so often there is someone that has always been Emo and was ecstatic that it became so easy to buy their clothes now, they no longer have to go through the thrift stores to find what they need. Good for you, pat on the back. One of my top friends who I love very much a shout out to you, you know who you are (F.Y.C.), I know you were excited that all your clothes are now at Hot Topic but upset that you can no longer find your Emo clothes in thrift stores because they are taken by Emo wannabe’s. These Emo’s I see are not too proud to have the name Emo’s because they are very confident and secure and not in the least bit ’emotional’. I consider these not to be Emo’s but something better......"Orginal" and not afraid to be who they are.
As for the pathetic little teenagers who change their style from ’pink princess’ to ’emotional’ in less than one month. I am conserned for your well-being and lack of a solid base and knowledge of who you are. There is only one way to solve your emotional problems and that is to not be afraid to be yourselves. I may be wrong but that has been my impression thus far. I pitty the fat teenager that so confidently in his whinning bitching voice "I am Emo", this stands for ’emotional’." and preceeds to draw cut marks across his wrists. Which leads to my next question....
When did self mutulation become cool?
